My brother has my bug at the moment for the installation of the Kwik Wire harness. He's done this before, just not on a VW. Things aren't going as easily as they could due to the "univeral" nature of the harness, and the quality of the VW wiring diagram. But I'm hoping he'll have it done in the next month. Looking forward to getting it back on the road.

Was it made specifically for the VW?

I am worried about having to pull out my factory wiring and not being able to figure out where everything goes.

No, it isn't, it's a universal 14 circuit system. Prewired fuse block with ATC fuses, flasher units and horn relay. I found several setups specifically for the bug, but they were big$ and more than I needed. Watson Streetworks has one (made by American Autowire); it's 18 circuits but retails for about $350 I think. More than I needed for a baja style. There are lots of decent universal setups on eBay or I have links to a lot of hot rod places that sell universal kits. Kwik wire impressed me the most between price and quality.

Yeah, it can be a pain, but the PO had seriously hacked the wiring. There were two old style fuse blocks, the headlights worked in only hi or low (no indicator to tell), the turn signals didn't work, and the charging system wasn't connected. Rather than trace wires (and deal with old style fuses), we decided a replacement was in order.

Part of the problem he's running into tho is the VW wiring diagram. Seems the 72-older diagrams are simple ; showing the component and colored wires. The 73+ is more convoluted with connection designators so you have to consult a couple lists as well. Being as he's doing this in his spare time, it's taking longer.

Yeah.

73+ is worlds different compared to earlier diagrams. They had a lot more safety wiring things and more and more features.
